Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Welcome to UAC Hot Seats. We are here with Dan and Dr. P. Martone and we are wanting to hear all about Dan and tell us where you are practicing and what you are up to.
Dr. Dan Reed: Yeah, my name is Dr. Dan Reed. I practice in Columbus, Ohio. I have a family wellness practice, about 80% wellness, 20% PI.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Nice.
Dr. Dan Reed: And I’ve been running that since October of 2017.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: That’s amazing. How’s Ohio?
Dr. Dan Reed: Love Ohio. I was born and raised here. I grew up in the town of Upper Arlington. If any of you golfers out there know Upper Arlington is home of Jack Nicholas. And he is the Golden Bear. That is our high school, Upper Arlington Golden Bear. And we just had the Memorial Tournament here this weekend. So, big golfing town. But after chiropractic school in 2015, we graduated me and my wife. We’re both from here. So, we decided to come back and start our beautiful family. And have our parents around us have a village to help us raise the family.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Love that.
Dr. Dan Reed: So, we came back to Columbus, Ohio. It is my home. It’s a great community. And we really enjoy it here.
Dr. Peter Martone: Now, what was your journey to UAC? Just talk to us about how you got connected and what you look forward to about it and your continued excitement about it.
Dr. Dan Reed: I definitely will tell you that, Pete. So, I opened up in 2017. I started my chiropractic career fall of 2015, joining my cousin along with a group of owners. They owned about five chiropractic shops around Columbus. You’re promised everything and you were given nothing. So, I quickly realized in ’17 that I had to start my own shop and went into it very humbly. My mom was battling rheumatoid arthritis and so she’s hopped in at the desk with me. She retired from Ohio State at 31 years and said, Let’s turn this thing, let’s make this thing and turn it into something. And so she started with me in ’17 and quickly got that up to two employees. And then the madness started in 2020 and it was pretty crazy around our town. It’s very medical with the Ohio State University being here with the Ohio State Medical System here and very affluent community. You know, I was doing half days in my office trying to figure out where to go. And during that time, a number of local chiropractors started getting together. We needed accountability. We needed to talk with each other. We needed to figure out what was going on in our lives, how we could help each other navigate through this process. And one of them was Mr. Bharon Hoag.
Dr. Dan Reed: He is in my town of Columbus, Ohio, and he’s been a part of UAC, I believe, since 2020, 2019, a little bit earlier than me. And so, we started in 2020 just local accountability meetings once a month at somebody’s practice to talk about problems we’re facing, how we could help each other, how we could support each other. And that’s when our relationship, Bharon and I’s relationship started to grow. I quickly found out he was into golf and hockey, just like I am. So, we started going to our professional hockey team’s games here in Columbus, Ohio. And that’s where our friendship developed. And, you know, me being in practice, I had a daughter in ’18 and my son, I found out the first week of March of 2020 that we were having my second child right when everything was going down and had him November 9th, 2020. So, it was a crazy year. And we also moved in October of that year into our house that we own now. So, speaking with him, I said, you know, Bharon, I need people in my life. I need like-minded people. I need valued people, people that I could talk to because, you know, I do have high school friends here. But, you know, we weren’t on the same wavelength when it came to politics, COVID and all that in 2020. So, he said, I got an option for you, and I got a great group that I’ve become a part of. And it’s something that you need. And so, I applied, I believe, in December of ’21 and threw my application in and got a call or an email and then a call from Dr. Stefanie.
Dr. Dan Reed: And she said, hey, I want to interview you, want to see where you’re at and if this group would be good for you. And I believe after the week she went back to board members. She said, we need your energy, Dr. Dan, we love you. We want more young people in UAC. So, get in where you fit in and let’s get on this journey together. So, I committed then. And from there, it’s been an incredible ride.
Dr. Peter Martone: Wow, that’s great. I love hearing that. I didn’t know that story. And what have you picked up from UAC? Like tell me, like when you’ve gotten there, you know, obviously the connections, but, you know, what’s the biggest takeaways that you’ve had during UAC from your time in it?
Dr. Dan Reed: Yeah, I haven’t really listened to the podcast too much. I know a lot of people talk about connections and the trips. When I speak of mine, it has to be my accountability group. Our accountability group from day one has been very strong. We are on it every week. And I have the biggest support system there that I’ve ever asked for in my life. Three guys who are in my group and who have been in it since I’ve been in it are Dr. Bart Patzer, Dr. Andrew Torchio and Mr. Kevin Priestley. Kevin and Bart have been 20-year veterans of the chiropractic community. Andrew has a very successful practice out of Oregon. He’s been in UAC since pre-2020. And those guys have become family to me. Like I said, you better be on fire, or you better be having a child to miss a meeting. And they’ve been there for me every step of the way since ’21 when I started joining. And this year I believe we’re all going to take a trip together, get together on a weekend trip because that’s how close our relationships have grown. So, I would say support in that regard. Like-minded people, we love going on the vacations.
Dr. Dan Reed: But again, I’ll see you and Stefanie twice, maybe three times a year with these guys. They’re on a call weekly with us. And now we’re starting to get together in person because our relationships have grown so much. So, mine, I would say, would be my accountability to support everything I need throughout the week, whether it’s personally, whether it’s professionally. Andrew has three beautiful young daughters. I have two young kids, a girl and a boy, a girl who’s 6 and a boy who’s 3. So, whether it’s anything that I need, whether it’s personally or professionally, they’re always there for me. Bart and Kevin both had kids. They’re all grown. So anytime I need advice, I can reach out to them within a text, within a call, within a video. And that’s what I really needed when I reached out and committed to this group in 2021. So, it would have to be my accountability group.
Dr. Peter Martone: Yeah. And I…
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: That’s so awesome.
Dr. Peter Martone: I love that you say that. That’s great.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: I feel the same way, like my accountability group is everything and it just makes such a huge difference. Do you have like a specific story that you can really think of that, like you’ve been able to go with your accountability group, too, and like how that’s really made a huge change?
Dr. Dan Reed: Yeah, I would just say pretty much any like just from a business standpoint, you know, if something’s not working, you know, there are a lot of times, you know, or one thing. So, Bart’s really big into decompression therapy. And, you know, Kevin was looking for an associate and something to maximum, he wanted to maximize his margins more so he can pay for an associate. And Kevin got him, into his decompression business and that enhanced his margin tenfold over the last year. And he can’t thank him enough. You know, he lives in a state of California where, you know, living is getting a lot more expensive. And so, we need other means of income. And that’s really helped him. One thing with mine, just I would say, you know, something in my life, I’ve always you know, we’re always looking at SEO as well as social and all the different funnels that we bring in. And with one of my accountability groups, one of the members, Andrew, was actually working, I believe, with a SEO company. And I got in with them and I’ve gone here and there with a bunch of digital marketing companies. And this company that I’ve been working with over the last three or four months has really worked out. So just bouncing ideas off of each other business wise has been great.
Dr. Dan Reed: You know, what are you using here? What are you using there? Even from an HR standpoint, contract standpoint, with all of my staff, we’re really trying to think of different ways to, I would say, enhance or bonus our employees rather than just doing it more on the net of what our business brings in on a monthly basis. Trying to figure out just different tweaks, different ideas for our employees. Those are just different ideas that we work on every week, whether it’s business, whether it’s personal, a lot of great things, ideas that they bring to the table for me, business and personally wise.
Dr. Dan Reed: So those are kind of some examples. I’m always asking them about kids because kids are, I’m real deep in the kids right now with a 3 and 6-year-old, just like you, Stef. So, you know, relationship wise, wife, you know, I treat, they always say, treat your business-like family and your family like business. I’ve really learned that over the last couple of years. Keep your wife before your kids. So, you know, Bart always goes on date nights with his wife. I’ve incorporated that into my life. He’s given me a couple of great suggestions. I love going on UAC vacations with the wife without the kids so we can rejuvenate our marriage as we’re continuing on in this journey. So just a lot of great things personally and professionally that they provide for me and my accountability group that have really helped with my journey in life and my journey as a businessman as well as a father.
Dr. Peter Martone: Yeah, that’s great. I’ve been on what, I’ve been on a accountability call with the same guy since TS. Total Solutions back in ’06, I think, or ’07. And I’ll tell you, it’s these are just these are just lifelong relationships and, you know, and no other group that like I’ve been to some pretty intense meetings and stuff like that. I think Patrick did a great job when, I’m one of the founding members. I was there at the very beginning; I think 2011 with Patrick. And one of the things that he really, you know, was really on is listen, man, you guys got to create relationships outside of at this time. Yeah, it was everything was, it was called UAC because we’re trying to decide on the name. It’s like we got to create relationships because it’s those relationships. Yes, it’s great to show up for the events, which you got to because you all got to connect. But the relationships are really what it’s all about. And I love that you, point that out, especially, you know, how you’ve taken, you’ve got a great group and how you’ve just taken that and ran with it. That’s great.
Dr. Dan Reed: Yeah, when you look at it, you know, when you look at life as a whole, and on a day-to-day basis, I break it down on a day to day basis. My wife does not work with me. She’s not a part of my practice. My wife has her own profession. She is, she does a lot of development for Northwestern Mutual, and she’s changed her jobs over the last couple of years. But you know, life can be lonely. You know, you go in, you go to practice, you go home, you’re caring for your kids, you know, you’re loving on your wife as much as you can. But you know, you need people in your life, you need relationships in your life. And it’s hard to find that. And so being able to find that in my business community, where I can talk to people every week and grow a relationship. There is nothing better than that. Because even around in my community, you know, we see people a part of my community at the pool, maybe, you know, once a week, once a month, and you really don’t get the friendship like you do when you meet on a weekly basis. And you continue doing that over and over and over and over again. So, you know, they become some of my best friends in life. They’re always there for me. We’ve opened it up, you know, we’ve surrendered our hearts, we put everything out on the table. It isn’t just checking in business wise, and I don’t know who these people are. They know me in and out, I know them in and out. And that’s what really helps us grow and helps us become better friends.
Dr. Dan Reed: So yeah, it’s hard, you know, throughout the day-to-day life, you know, here in Columbus, Ohio, to develop great friends with people because you’re like, hey, can you guys want to come over to eat? Well, our kid has this our kid has that. Oh, we got this today. And you see people, you know, once every three months, but I really get to see the these are the only guys I tell you that I get to be with every week who are, you know, who have really been friends to me in my life. So, it’s an awesome thing to have. And I’m extremely grateful and blessed to be a part of it and to be able to have that in my life.
Dr. Peter Martone: And you remember life is lonely without Martone. So Daniel, if you’re ever lonely, you can always call me.
Dr. Dan Reed: I like that slogan. I like that slogan. I love that.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: All right, Dan, I thank you so much for sharing like all about the accountability group because that really is a huge pillar of what UAC is all about. And it really is, I think what brings the most value to this group is like those relationships that accountability having that weekly experience is such a like massive add to your life. Like how many people do we know that like really to do follow through with having a true accountability group. So, it’s such a blessing to have that in your life on a regular basis. Dan, tell me like, you know, just as other people in UAC, like we want to come to Dan, like what’s your superpower? What is it that you bring to the table that you know, you like shine with? I’d love to hear about that.
Dr. Dan Reed: People always ask me that, I, you know, and I don’t know, you don’t, don’t know how to answer that question. You know, I am a chiropractor. I would…
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: What do you think the guys in your accountability group would say about you?
Dr. Dan Reed: They would say, I would hopefully they say energy and work ethic. So, they would say, I hope that they would say is a born chiropractor. And, you know, we get into the, I would say I found chiropractic through not, through figuring out what I didn’t want to do in my life. So, chiropractic has been my second career. And that’s why I developed such a passion for chiropractic. Because before that, I graduated, I was a lacrosse player in college, and got a business degree and got out into the business world and started at nationwide because their headquarters are here in town, and really started out there not knowing what I wanted to do, but in six years, I realized what I didn’t want to do in life. And that was sit at a desk, sit behind a computer. I need to have relationships in my life, and I need to keep moving.
Dr. Dan Reed: I’m big into fitness right now. I run marathons. We work out every day at 42 years old. So, I know this body has to keep moving. So, when I went back to chiropractic school, I didn’t know anything about chiropractic. And when I got out, I’ve never been more on fire. And even today, after seven years of practice and going through the craziness of the hoax that we went through in 2020, my passion has never dwindled. So, I always say, you know, just being a true chiropractor, I could talk to chiropractic for days with anybody. I love my job. I love what I do. Being in with, I got to meet Steve and them getting into this group, they’ve gone up into kind of that CFO level where they’re running a lot of business.
Dr. Dan Reed: I’ve never been happier being in the trenches. I love being a chiropractor. So that’s kind of what I bring to this group on top of energy and work ethic. I live by the slogan and my dad, and his high school yearbook is I would either find a way or I’ll make it. My dad has taught I’ve come from one of four boys, my dad’s never taught us more than anything in life than hard work. If you work at something hard, you get out what you put in. And so that’s kind of what I bring to the table, my work ethic, my energy, if anybody needs anything, I’m always there for them. And as a chiropractor, I am through and through chiropractic. If I go, if you bring me down to a DE, I’d be there for day and night because it’s so it’s such fire in me. And I want to walk off the table and 50 years and go to sleep and not wake up and, really go into those heavenly gates being a chiropractor because I’ve never been happier. Being a chiropractor and I’ve never been happier. This has brought me so much joy in my life. I mean, six years ago, I had nothing with a kid on the way, no money in the bank. And just in the last six years of running a practice from ’17 and now being a chiropractor, I’ve been more blessed, had more joy than give more gifts in my life than ever could be imaginable. So that’s kind of what I bring to the table.
Dr. Dan Reed: I hopefully I bring happiness to people’s eyes every day because that’s just what I want to do. I want to be sunshine in somebody’s day, want to be a light to somebody, want to make a difference every day in somebody’s life because when you do, it all comes back to you in life. That’s what I bring to this world. That’s what I bring to this group is energy, happiness, joy. So, people can feel that and people can resonate with it because I would say this day and age, there’s been more negativity, more mental illness in this country than there’s ever been. And so, if I can be the light to somebody’s day, that’s what I want to be because this profession has not brought nothing to me but joy, joy, gratefulness and blessing. So that’s what that’s I believe that’s what my job is to do here on this on this world, the time that we have here. And so that’s what I’m going to do for the rest of my life ’cause I love it.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Keep bringing it, Dan. I love it.
Dr. Peter Martone: Yeah, man.
Dr. Dan Reed: So yeah, that’s kind of my gift and my talents. And that’s what I love doing every day. Work my ass off. And creating happiness in other people’s life and bringing other people’s joy and developing relationships. That’s what I love doing.
Dr. Peter Martone: It’s been so great having you in the hot seat, baby. I love love. Just, I got a totally different appreciation for you because I really didn’t know your story. But man, your passion for chiropractic, you take, passion and purpose and you can totally see that you’re aligned and you’re really expressing your soul purpose, through what you’re doing every single day in your business. So, congratulations. That’s great to see.
Dr. Dan Reed: I appreciate that. I’ve lived a life and I’ve lived a job where I dread going to work on Monday, and I’ve never been in a job where I am on fire to get back to work on a Monday, just like this Monday. So, you know, if you got that going for in your life, not a lot of people do. And I, like I said, I’ve never been blessed and had more joy in my life. I’ve never been blessed to find chiropractic. The more it’s given me and it’s the more I want to get back to this profession because of how much it’s blessed me in my life just over, you know, the short period of time that I’ve been able to be a chiropractor, in life. So yeah.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Dan, thank you so much. I love your fire and your passion. You got any good closing thoughts? Anything you want anybody in UAC to know a little bit more about, Dan Reed?
Dr. Dan Reed: I just say hopefully I can meet all you people. We’re going to hopefully try and get down this, July. We weren’t able to make it out to Colorado. We got a huge family event coming up, for my parents’ anniversary down to Florida. But we’re going to try and get back down to the Florida one at the Breakers, the business conference. Me and my wife went to Vegas last year as well as New Orleans, the business one the previous year. So, if any of you’re listening, please, if you’re at in a conference or at an event, come up and say hi to me. I’m the short guy that’ll be there with a lot of energy. But, if any of you, just to throw it out, if any of you UACers ever need anything are ever down or ever looking for a new accountability group or anybody to talk to, please get my number and reach out to me. because I love connecting with everybody in this group. I love growing these relationships and, hopefully I can be a part of it for years to come. So that’s kind of my parting ways and parting words. Please look out for me. Look out for the long hair. I am not cutting it all this year but look out for the long hair. Look out for the hair and look…
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Is it slowing you down in your races, Dan?
Dr. Dan Reed: No, it’s only getting better with the wind.
Dr. Peter Martone: No, that’s wind tunnel tested baby. Yeah, Dan.
Dr. Dan Reed: This shit just gives me more ergonomics and gets me flowing in that wind. So yeah, I would just say please reach out to me, please, look out for me. because we’re going to keep coming to conferences, keep being part of this great group. And like I said, Stefanie, I can’t thank you enough for committing to me in ’21 and saying, you know, we don’t care where this kid is in life. We need him in our group. We need him to be a bar to this group because it’s brought me so much joy and so much love and so many relationships. So, I just appreciate you Guys.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Your energy is where it’s at, Dan, keep, stay on fire. You’re rocking it. It’s awesome. It’s really fun to see.
Dr. Dan Reed: Well, thank you for having me a part of this podcast and, I can’t wait to see you guys here in the near future.
Dr. Stefanie Rodsater: Sounds awesome. Thank you so much, Dan.
Dr. Peter Martone: Thank you. You have been in the hot seat with Stefanie, Peter and Dan.
